Uber has started testing in-app video recording for its drivers in India, marking one of the company’s biggest safety-focused experiments in the country in recent years. The feature, which is being rolled out quietly and in phases, is aimed at addressing a growing concern among drivers, the fear of being blamed for something they didn’t do. While dashcams are common in some global markets, most Indian drivers do not use them, and Uber believes an in-app recording tool could fill that gap.
TechCrunch has reported that the trial began in May and has now reached 10 major cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Pune, Hyderabad, Chandigarh, Kolkata, Jaipur, and Lucknow. Drivers in these regions can activate video recording during a trip, and riders are immediately notified through an in-app alert. Uber confirmed the rollout after multiple drivers in the Delhi–NCR region shared their experiences about dealing with passenger misconduct and the risk of false allegations.
For many drivers, the feature comes as a relief. Some said they often find themselves in uncomfortable situations where even minor disagreements can escalate into serious claims.
