Uber, Lyft push back on rideshare regulations in Chicago - Crain's Chicago Business

Earlier this year, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz vetoed a measure that would have increased pay and job security for rideshare drivers after Uber threatened to severely reduce its operations in the state. In 2022, the local Teamsters union in Washington state partnered with Uber and Lyft to pass a bill that provided increased pay and benefits for rideshare drivers in exchange for clarity that those drivers are classified as independent contractors, not employees of the companies, and exempting cities like Seattle from further regulating the companies. And in May, Chicago Ald. Mike Rodriguez, 22nd, an ally of Mayor Brandon Johnson and chair of the Workforce Development Committee, introduced a comprehensive measure to increase pay and worker protections for drivers, reintroducing Chicago to the fight to regulate the powerful companies.
