UFC lightweight champion Ilia Topuria has said he is stepping away from competition after becoming the target of what he describes as an extortion attempt involving false allegations of domestic abuse.
Topuria, who announced in November that he would pause fighting during the first half of 2026, addressed the situation in a public statement on Monday, saying he had been threatened unless financial demands were met. He said the allegations being used against him were “entirely unfounded”.
Topuria says evidence has been submitted to authorities
The undefeated fighter said he has preserved audio recordings, written communications, witness statements and video material, all of which have been submitted to judicial authorities.
According to Topuria, the evidence forms the basis of legal action related to attempted extortion, falsification of evidence, misappropriation of funds and multiple threats.
He said he initially chose to remain silent to protect his family’s privacy, but decided to speak out after what he described as false narratives began to circulate publicly.
“The truth is not a matter of opinion. It is a matter of evidence,” Topuria said, adding that he had full confidence in the judicial process.
