A United Kingdom court has sentenced Chukwuemeka Ahanonu, a Nigerian national, to life imprisonment for the killing of a 56-year-old woman, Nila Patel, following a violent attack in Leicester.
The incident occurred on June 24, 2025, along Infirmary Road in Leicester, where Ahanonu, 24, launched a fatal attack on Patel shortly after crashing his car.
According to Leicestershire Police, the suspect had been driving erratically around the city centre before the attack.
Witness accounts and CCTV footage showed him swerving across lanes, running red lights, and veering dangerously toward pedestrians.
His vehicle eventually crashed, after which he fled the scene on foot.

Patel, who had just alighted from a bus and was walking home, became an unintended victim of what authorities described as a random act of violence.
Ahanonu attacked her on the street, inflicting severe injuries.
Security personnel from the nearby Leicester Royal Infirmary intervened and restrained the suspect until police officers arrived.
Medical staff rushed Patel for treatment, but she sustained critical injuries, including a fractured skull and significant brain trauma.
She died two days later, on June 26, prompting authorities to re-arrest Ahanonu on suspicion of murder.
Investigators revealed that Ahanonu had been under the influence of cannabis at the time of the incident.
