U.K. Meningitis Outbreak Gets the Health Hoax Treatment - NewsGuard's Reality Check

What’s happening: Misinformers are borrowing heavily from the health hoax playbook to generate false claims related to an ongoing deadly outbreak of bacterial meningitis in the U.K. NewsGuard has identified four such claims since the outbreak began on March 13, 2026, in Kent, a county in southeastern England.

Context: As of March 23, the U.K. Health Security Agency has reported 20 confirmed and nine probable cases of meningitis linked to Kent, resulting in two deaths. Meningitis is “an infection of the protective membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord,” which can affect anyone and “can be very serious if not treated quickly,” the U.K. National Health Service (NHS) says on its website. “Overall, it’s estimated up to 1 in every 10 cases of bacterial meningitis is fatal,” the NHS adds.

A closer look: Four false narratives have emerged in response to the U.K. meningitis outbreak, along with their uncanny resemblance to previous health myths, including ones promoted during the COVID-19 pandemic:

Simulation stimulation: Conspiracy-oriented social media users baselessly claim that the outbreak was planned by the U.K. government — as proven by a government exercise.
