Russia is bluffing about its battlefield gains and deliberately sabotaging peace efforts, Andrii Melnyk, Ukraine’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and former Ambassador of Ukraine to Germany, said at the March 23 UN Security Council meeting, according to Ukrinform.
“What we are witnessing is a carefully staged performance that Russia continues to play out,” Melnyk said, noting that Moscow is deliberately distorting the real situation on the frontlines, creating the illusion of strength even as its positions deteriorate.
Russian dictator Vladimir Putin relies on bluffing and false claims in negotiations, projecting confidence in victory while refusing to agree to any compromises short of Ukraine’s de facto surrender.
“We are dealing with the longest three-day blitzkrieg in human history, which has been going on for over four years,” Melnyk said.
According to his calculations, Russian forces have captured only about 9,300 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory over three and a half years. At that pace, he said, it would take Russia approximately 183 years to fully occupy Ukraine.
“That is precisely why Putin demands that Ukraine surrender, without a fight, the territories that Russia has failed to occupy in over 12 years of aggression. By turning such ultimatums into terms of negotiation, Russia is deliberately blocking the peace process.”
