HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WCHS) — An agreement between the city of Huntington and three unions will raise the minimum wage for firefighters, police and municipal workers to $15 an hour.
Three unions – FOP Goldstar Lodge 65, International Association of Firefighters Local 289 and American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees – have reached contract agreements that, among other things, will raise the minimum wage, according to a spokesperson for the city.
The statewide minimum wage in West Virginia is currently $8.75 an hour.
The spokesperson said the raise for FOP members will make the Huntington Police Department the highest paid law enforcement organization in West Virginia. A police officer in Huntington can make a base salary of more than $55,000 after the first year.
The wage raises will be staggered for each union over the next several years.
The spokesperson said the FOP contract was approved several months ago, but the firefighter and public works unions approved their contracts in recent weeks.
