The oldest newspaper in Central Texas on Thursday evening refuted claims that it was laying off its entire local staff.
The Cameron Herald-a weekly paper that has served Cameron and Milam County for 166 years-said that it laid off two employees. It added that one of those employees had access to the newspaper's Facebook page and "this angry person wildly misstated the facts."
"The paper did not 'lose its entire newsroom,' nor did it 'announce that the entire staff had been laid off," said David Leibowitz, a representative for Times Media Group. "The person who posted these accusations had worked at the paper for three weeks prior to the sale to TMG."
Leibowitz added that the owner of the building where the newspaper was located sold the building, so The Cameron Herald moved to office space at the Chamber of Commerce building.
The newspaper was founded in 1860. In February, Times Media Group acquired Moser Community Media's portfolio of 32 Texas newspapers, including The Cameron Herald, through a joint venture with Moser Media, also known as Texas Local Media Company.
At the time of the purchase, Times Media Group founder and publisher Steve Strickbine said the company planned to invest in local journalism.
