The U.S. Department of Justice has initiated a criminal investigation into former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, focusing on allegations that he lied to Congress regarding his administration’s handling of nursing home deaths during the COVID-19 pandemic. The probe follows a referral from the Republican-led House Oversight Committee, which claims Cuomo made false statements during a June 2024 interview with the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic.
Cuomo, who is currently a leading candidate in the New York City mayoral race, has denied any wrongdoing. His spokesperson, Rich Azzopardi, criticised the investigation as politically motivated, suggesting it was an attempt to interfere with his campaign. The Justice Department has not publicly commented on the investigation.
The investigation centres on Cuomo’s role in a July 2020 New York State Department of Health report that allegedly undercounted nursing home deaths by 46%. Evidence suggests Cuomo was more involved in drafting the report than he admitted during his testimony. The probe is being led by Jeanine Pirro, a former political rival of Cuomo and outspoken critic of his COVID-19 policies.
