An official within the U.S. Postal Service has alleged that the agency is moving forward with a "secretive" and "rushed" effort to implement President Donald Trump's order, which imposes federal control over mail voting.
The official noted that the plans were being implemented despite a court order blocking those plans. A whistleblower report published on Tuesday by the office of Connecticut Senator Richard Blumenthal said that the rushed implementation of the president's order could lead to “catastrophic failure” in the mail ballot system ahead of the midterm elections.
According to the report, the agency planned to complete the new digital system overseeing the mail-in ballots by September 1. "Potentially millions of American voters may not receive their mail-in ballot this election cycle in a timely manner, or at all," the official said in the report.

Senator Blumenthal, a Democrat, told The New York Times that to him, the main takeaway from the report was that "the Postal Service has designed a system to disenfranchise millions of Americans." He added, "One-third of all Americans cast their ballots by mail, and the U.S.P.S. puts all of their votes at risk.”
