U.S. Rep. Mike Ezell fired back at Independent challenger Carl Boyanton on Sept. 29, filing a response to Boyanton's accusations of illegal campaign donations and reporting him for fraudulent filings.
Boyanton announced on Sept. 21 that he was reporting Ezell to the Federal Election Commission following a series of what he described as campaign finance law violations. The produce farmer wrote in his complaint that members of the Chouest family had unlawfully contributed more than the maximum personal donation limit; their contributions were illegal in the first place, he said, because their shipbuilding company holds a federal contract.
Boyanton's allegations stretched across 22 hand-annotated pages, including campaign finance documents, a press release from the subcommittee that Ezell chairs and an internet search.
About a week later, a spokesperson for Ezell's campaign dismissed Boyanton's claims as "false allegations" and stated it would be reporting him to the FEC.
