Sept. 1 (UPI) -- A whistleblower sounded the alarm on Tuesday over the U.S. Postal Service secretly implementing new mail-voting policies that could disrupt the midterm elections.
The whistleblower, who has been described by attorneys as a federal official, informed Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., of new policies ordered by President Donald Trump's executive order to change voting rules. They have accused the USPS and Trump administration of ignoring a Supreme Court ruling that blocked the implementation of the executive order.
The changes, which have been hidden from the public, could disenfranchise a large number of voters, the whistleblower warns.
Blumenthal has called on Postmaster General David Steiner for answers.
"The main takeaway for me is that the Postal Service has designed a system to disenfranchise millions of Americans," Blumenthal told reporters. "One third of all Americans cast their ballots by mail and the USPS puts all of their votes at risk."
The USPS did not immediately comment on the report.
The Trump administration has ordered states to share their voter rolls, directing the USPS to screen state vote-by-mail policies and procedures. The administration also issued a mandate for USPS to refuse to deliver mail-in ballots in states that do not use its system for uploading voter information.
Last week, a judge blocked the mandate from taking effect.
