As the summer programs at many firms are underway and first-year associate start dates are not too far around the corner (for most), I am reminded of the many lessons I learned as a summer and first-year associate. The first forays into legal practice are nerve-wracking, exciting and filled with steep learning curves. There is much to learn substantively, professionally and personally, but the expectation to deliver excellent work products will remain paramount throughout your career.
Undoubtedly, expectations for work product from summer and first-year associates will be different, but the process of receiving, executing and delivering an assignment is a skill, and like all skills, the more you practice, the better you become. Accordingly, focusing on this fundamental process as early as possible will help position an associate for long-term success.
