The Indian government announced that the Viksit Bharat - Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) Act, or VB-G RAM G, will officially take effect starting July 1. This move marks a significant transition as it replaces the long-standing Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).
While the Ministry of Rural Development hails it as a historic change aimed at securing livelihoods, enhancing rural incomes, and developing infrastructure, criticisms from the Congress party describe the rollout as an exercise in centralization potentially harmful to rural labor's bargaining power.
Despite the government's assurance of a smooth transition, with ongoing works under MGNREGA being integrated without disruption, operational details remain scarce and public consultations are yet to be meaningfully conducted.
