A TikTok video falsely claimed that drinking water right after a meal could weaken the stomach’s digestive juices and affect digestion.
Citing an ancient Indian medical practice called Ayurveda, it also claimed that drinking water after eating could lead to intestinal issues, weight gain and reduced skin glow.
“Bakit bawal uminom ng tubig (Why should you not drink water) AFTER EATING,” the video’s in-text caption read.
Health experts are saying otherwise. VERA Files Fact Check debunks five claims from the Jan. 20 video posted by TikTok user Clara Day-Herrera (claradayh), who claims to be UK-certified in plant-based nutrition.
During digestion, water is absorbed and does not dilute digestive juices, according to Racquel Jahn Cordero, Media Production Specialist II of the National Nutrition Council’s Nutrition Information and Education Division.
“Even if you had a stomach full of water, it would not interfere with digestion of the food,” Deborah D. Proctor, Medical Director for the Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Program at Yale University, was quoted in a 2019 Washington Post article.
Drinking water makes the stomach slightly less acidic, although the body produces more stomach acid to help digest the meal, American-registered dietitian Tamara Duker said in the same article.
Not true. Water helps food move down the esophagus easily. It also aids in preventing constipation and breaking down food, Cordero, who is also a registered nutritionist-dietitian, explained.
