VHP functionary held in bid to extort money from priest after ... - SabrangIndia

This is yet another example of a strong network of vigilantes that uses extortion to pressurize the Christian clergy. According to The Hindu, police have arrested Muthuvel, 40, district secretary of Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) on the charge of demanding money from a parish priest in the Ariyalur district of Tamil Nadu.

According to sources, Muthuvel allegedly threatened Dominic Savio, parish priest of Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Ariyalur, to pay 25 lakh to him (III), failing which his image would be tarnished. Based on a complaint, the police arrested Muthuvel, a serial offender who was also involved in the sordid case of a student suicide last January (2022), after which a slew of contrarian claims of “conversion” were sought to be heaped. Now the same Muthovel of the VHP has been remanded to 15 days judicial custody. The threat was that reportedly (false) allegations of sexual misdemeanour would be converted to several complaints against the parish priest. Fortunately the police in this instance acted impartially and promptly. It is left to be seen whether or not intrepid investigations are conducted and a proper criminal case launched thereafter. Or whether the case will be allowed to just drop.
