MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) - False information went viral in Alabama after claims that a legislative bill requiring teachers to report students who smell like marijuana was signed into law.
The graphic, which was circulated on Facebook, claims that bill was set to go into effect Oct. 1. These claims are untrue, however.
House Bill 72 never made it to Gov. Kay Ivey’s desk and, as a result, it never become law in Alabama.
The bill, which was sponsored by Rep. Patrick Sellers (D-Pleasant Grove) would have required teachers and mandatory reporters to report students who smell like marijuana. The Alabama Department of Human Resources would have been involved in investigating these situations.
However, while the bill passed in the Alabama House on Jan. 29, it died in the Senate.
The Senate Judiciary Committee was assigned the bill but never added it to a committee agenda before the regular session ended.
The Alabama Legislature has a website that provides all information about a bill’s status.
To find a bill’s status, take the following steps:
1) Go to alison.legislature.state.al.us
2) Click on ‘bill search’
3) Type in the bill number, in this case, HB72
4) Look for the column ‘current status’ ; if a bill has been signed into law, it will be labeled as ‘enacted’
If a bill has not been signed into law, such as HB72, the latest step of the legislative process will be shown.
For HB72, the latest step is ‘pending committee action in second house.’
