Viral TikTok falsely says UT System is trying to ban the word 'racism' - Austin American-Statesman

A viral video on TikTok falsely claims the University of Texas System is “trying to ban” professors from saying the word “racism.”

A UT System spokesperson told the Statesman the claim is "bogus."

In the video from last week, Victoria Alexander, a University of Maryland doctorate student and a self-proclaimed “anti-racism educator,” falsely claimed professors within the UT System could be punished, disciplined, fired, demoted or sent to jail for using the word "racism." The video on TikTok, a short-form video hosting platform, had more than 379,000 views and 94,000 likes as of Wednesday afternoon.

“If they were to bring a public speaker, like me, to campus to teach, they couldn’t read my bio because it says I’m an anti-racism educator,” said Alexander, who has nearly 500,000 followers on TikTok.

Alexander also falsely claimed there is a hotline where “people can call and tattle on professors” who say the word "racism" to try to get those professors sent to jail or fired, and that the UT System is projected to spend at least $6 million to enforce the ban.

“Throughout history, even in fiction, the people who are sending people to prison for their knowledge, for the truth, they’re not the good guys,” Alexander said.
