DELPHOS — Van Wert County Sheriff’s Office Detective-Sergeant Kyle Fittro has been selected as the Veterans of Foreign Wars Department of Ohio Law Officer of the Year. This award is prestigious, and the selection process by which candidates are chosen is very rigorous.

Each VFW post nominates a law officer every year. The nominations include a binder with the nominee’s professional record: training certificates, commendations, letters of recommendation, notices of community or volunteer efforts and so on. These binders are then sent to the VFW law enforcement chairman at the District level. There are 12 districts in Ohio and 12 chairman. Of those hundreds of candidates 12 are chosen, one for each district. One of those 12 candidates is then chosen for Law Officer of the Year.

Detective-Sgt. Fittro represents VFW District Two, which includes Allen, Auglaize, Hardin, Logan, Mercer, Putnam, Shelby and Van Wert counties. Before his work at the Sheriff’s Office, Fittro was Police Chief of Delphos, a member of the West-Central Ohio Crime Task Force and a Special Deputy United States Marshal.

He currently lives in Delphos, and was nominated by VFW Post 3035.
