WASHINGTON — Walmart is not closing despite false claims circulating on TikTok linking the national retailer to the ongoing government shutdown and paused Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits.
Several viral videos on the platform falsely claim Walmart stores will shut their doors as panic over halted food assistance grows. One user said, “Walmart said the doors will be locked. Ain’t nobody coming in the store but the employees. Place your order online.”
Another video, with more than 1 million views, referenced rumors of looting and suggested that police stationed at every store.
“Now every Walmart has a police officer on standby, and they're thinking about not opening the doors until the situation has passed,” the TikToker said.
A Walmart spokesperson, however, confirmed that’s not true. Stores will remain open regardless of any government funding lapses.
The rumors come amid real concerns surrounding the pause of SNAP benefits, which support nearly 42 million Americans. The U.S. Department of Agriculture confirmed in a notice early this week that no SNAP benefits will be distributed on Nov. 1 if the shutdown continues.
As the halt to benefits looms, food banks across the country are already reporting surges in demand from families bracing for disruptions.
