OTTUMWA, Iowa — On Tuesday, Wapello County Attorney Reuben Neff released a statement regarding the sentencing of Gregory Showalter Sr.
A jury found the Ottumwa man guilty last month of first-degree murder, abuse of a corpse, willful injury, and domestic abuse in the case of Helen Showalter's death.
The body of his wife was found in the Des Moines River near the Cliffland Boat Ramp in Wapello County in August of 2021.
On Monday, Showalter was given life in prison without the possibility of parole.
In the statement from Neff, he said that Showalter "made several false claims, attempting to undermine the jury's diligent work."
Neff also added,
"We extend our deepest gratitude to the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigations for their exhaustive efforts in gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, and analyzing crucial cellphone location data. A special commendation goes to Deputy Miguel Torres, whose dedicated investigation raised suspicions about Helen’s disappearance on July 31, 2021. We also acknowledge the extraordinary contributions of the Wapello County Sheriff’s Office and Ottumwa Police Department, whose collective work in collecting vast amounts of video footage, audio recordings, and witness statements was indispensable.
