Council needs to get policies right for municipal staff, Mayor Brian Smith says
New municipal policies to protect Wasaga Beach employees from harassment and from calling out wrongdoing will be getting one more review by staff before being codified.
At its Jan. 26 meeting, council referred both policies back to staff to take a final look before giving the stamp of approval.
In the case of a whistleblower policy protecting an employee from reprisal if they raise a red flag about activity that could be considered corrupt or illegal, council wanted more information on keeping an option open for employees to take a complaint to an independent third party.
“It would not be the standard, but if, for some reason, any staff felt it was not in their best interest to report a concern internally, they would have an option for a third party,” said Coun. Joe Belanger, who has repeatedly pressed for the option to be in the policy. “I would think in the vast majority of cases, the employee would go to (human resources) or a director, but in an unusual situation where the individuals involved are potentially senior managers who have relationships with one another and influence … there should be this option.
“It’s not a reflection on anyone … it’s just another layer of safety for an employee, if they feel that long-standing relationships within an organization might impact the outcome of their complaint, they should have that option to talk to an independent third party.”
