PASCO, Wash. — The Washington State Department of Corrections’ newly relocated field office in Pasco has become the target of vandalism after false claims on social media that it is an ICE facility.
The Department of Corrections has dozens of field offices across the state where offenders check in with probation officers. In Pasco, the office recently moved into a former Rite Aid building.
Two separate times this month, people vandalized the site, spray-painting undercover vehicles and parts of the building with anti-ICE slogans.
“It’s just been frustrating for everyone out there to have it happen multiple times, especially because this is not an ICE facility. This is a state department of corrections facility,” said Chris Wright, communications director for the Washington Department of Corrections.
In response, the state is spending thousands of dollars on security upgrades at the building. Wright said the office’s primary purpose is to keep the community safe and hold people accountable.
