Kyle Chalmers is no stranger to adversity. He’s come back successfully from heart and shoulder issues so serious they’ve required surgery.

But the champion swimmer has revealed taking to the pool after suffering from “clickbait” and “false” media coverage of his relationships within the Australian team was “one of the biggest challenges I’ve had to face”.

The 24-year-old has admitted he didn’t want to swim at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham on Sunday after a tumultuous past day when he strongly condemned sections of the media which smeared him based on a fake love triangle.

In a poolside interview with Channel 7’s Cate Campbell after he reached the semi-finals of the men’s 100m freestyle, he also reiterated his admission that the ordeal has made him want to quit swimming.

“It’s hard. It’s hard for me to stand up and swim this morning,” he said.

“It’s probably one of the biggest challenges I’ve had to face.

“I think media don’t realise, as I said on Instagram, how much impact it has on athletes and mental health.

“For me it took all my courage and all my energy just to stand behind the blocks and swim this morning. It’s not something that I wanted to do. It’s not something that I wanted to go through, to be honest with you.

“I’ve been so excited for this moment for such a long period of time and been working...
