The legal representatives of Awerco Construction Limited have issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the Ministry of Health, demanding an immediate retraction and apology over a press release concerning the Weija Paediatric Hospital.
In a letter dated May 8, 2026, the law firm Kodjoe & Associates accused the Ministry of making "unfounded" allegations that have severely damaged the contractor's reputation.
The dispute centers on a publication signed by Ministry spokesperson Tony Goodman on May 5, which suggested that Awerco was responsible for the delay in operationalizing the newly completed facility. The Ministry further alleged that a 2024 World Bank report raised concerns about "misprocurement," claiming medical equipment costs were inflated by as much as 11 times their actual price. Awerco has dismissed these claims as entirely without factual or evidential basis.
According to the rejoinder, the primary reasons for the hospital's stalled opening are the Ministry’s own financial defaults and technical oversights. Awerco states it has fulfilled its contractual obligations but has not been paid for over a year. The contractor further asserts that the Ministry has consistently ignored official correspondence regarding these outstanding debts. This lack of funding has reportedly prevented the completion of mandatory end-user training, a prerequisite for the safe handover of the project.
