WESH 2 Investigates reveals millions of dollars in unclaimed wages - WESH 2 Orlando

ORLANDO, Fla. —

As we're emerging from the pandemic-driven economic collapse, thousands of workers across the country and in Florida have millions in unclaimed wages waiting to be collected.

It’s money that was illegally withheld by employers.

Jashuan Hogg is an air conditioning installer who used to work for Del-Air Heating, Air Conditioning and Plumbing in Sanford.

Last year, the company was ordered to pay $334,307 in back wages to 212 workers.

Federal court documents obtained by WESH 2 Investigates, show Del-Air violated provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act and agreed to a consent judgment against it.

In the U.S. Department of Labor’s new release, it explains the company paid "a piece-rate (a set amount per job) to installers regardless of how many hours they worked."

The violation resulted in Del-Air paying a fine of $82,616.

Hogg was paid $8,062.33 in back wages, money recovered through the government's investigation.

“I just think it's unfair and they should be held responsible. By law, even if you work over 40 hours, you're supposed to get paid the overtime, but you know, we weren't getting paid the overtime," Hogg said.

WESH 2 Investigates talked with the President of Del-Air, Ken Veneziano outside the company’s headquarters. He declined to speak on-camera and did not respond to two emails requesting comments.
