West-central legislators list new laws they view as significant - Jacksonville Journal-Courier

Sometimes significance is in the eye of the beholder, especially when an action has the power to assist someone with a life-threatening condition.

Helping a constituent with a latex allergy was the aim of state Sen. Jil Tracy, R-Quincy, when she participated in the passage of a bill that restricts the use of latex gloves.

"There is a man in Beardstown who asked for a law banning latex gloves," Tracy said. "The last time he encountered latex, he ended up in an emergency room and, each time he's exposed, the reaction he has gets worse."

Under House Bill 0209, the Latex Glove Ban Act, food service workers are not allowed to wear latex gloves in the handling and preparation of ready-to-eat foods to protect people who are allergic to latex. The law took effect Sunday for EMS personnel and will apply to health facility staff members starting in 2024.

"It's not a biggie, like the SAFE-T Act, but I was happy to assist him and others because exposure to latex for thousands of Illinoisans is a life-threatening condition," Tracy said.

Tracy was among three west-central Illinois lawmakers, as well as several representatives of state agencies, who were surveyed by the Journal-Courier and asked to name two significant pieces of legislation that went into effect Sunday. Hundreds of new laws took effect then, including the SAFE-T Act that has received the lion's share of attention.
