The personal-finance website WalletHub studied data and released 2023’s Best & Worst States to Be a Police Officer, hoping to see which states can be models for improving the situation.
In order to determine the best states to pursue a career in law enforcement, WalletHub compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia “across 30 key indicators of police-friendliness.”
The data set ranges from the median income for law-enforcement officers to police deaths per 1,000 officers to state and local police-protection expenses per capita.
California rose above the rest in terms of best states to live in as a working law enforcement officer.
The state had the second best score with its training requirements for officers, and third best score for job opportunity.
Arkansas scored the lowest overall, performing poorly in the job opportunity and competition category as well as compensation.
Ohio ranked as the sixth best state overall to be a police officer, and sixth best for pay.
The state also ranked high as the fifth best for the quality of response training requirements officers must complete.
When deciding whether or not to pursue a career in law enforcement, job hazards and safety is a often major concern.
Ohio was number 25 for the top states with local police-protection expenses, and ranked 18 for states with most violent crime rates.
