What Horror Movies Teach Us About HR - Dentons

Horror movies have certainly had a resurgence over the last several years, but other than an escalating level of violence and gore they tend to rely on the same tropes we have seen forever from Plan 9 From Outer Space to Halloween. There is a final survivor - usually innocent, smart and resourceful; groups form – jocks, nerds; no matter how often you dispatch the killer, they get back up; authority tends to be incompetent and according to a basic AI search, there is an idiot plot where the story only works because characters make consistently terrible decisions. Anything from going to investigate the creepy noise, by yourself, dressed only in your nightgown with a faltering flashlight to covering up the crime all qualify as bad decisions. But the thing about horror movies is they play on classic human expectations that carry over into actual life, and these may be useful to think about when you interact with people during employment situations.

People believe in the bad things but not soon enough – a classic horror trope is that people know something is bad, they have a gut feeling that they are in a bad situation, but they wait too long until something truly terrible happens. This also happens in human resources - every HR manager has seen an employee who waits, and waits, before making a complaint. Or a supervisor gives A+ reviews until they want the employee fired. When issues are not resolved, they generally become much worse and have unexpected consequences.
