Ahead of the parliamentary elections in Moldova on September 28, false claims were spread in Georgian and Russian-language sources to discredit the leader of the ruling pro-European party and the country’s president, Maia Sandu.
During the pre-election period, Myth Detector fact-checked the following claims about Maia Sandu:
- A video fabrication in which Maia Sandu allegedly referred to Georgia as a Russian colony;
- A forged document concerning her mental health, circulated to discredit her;
- Gender-based disinformation, falsely alleging that Sandu illegally purchased sperm samples from Hollywood celebrities.

On September 28 and 29, Georgian and Russian-language sources circulated claims that Maia Sandu had referred to Georgia as “a Russian colony” during her pre-election address. Some posts and articles included a video of Sandu speaking in Romanian, with Russian subtitles added to the footage. In the segment mentioning Georgia, the subtitles read: “We see before our eyes how Georgia, by trampling on European values, has once again become a Russian colony. The Georgian authorities have deprived the people of the chance for a developed future in the European Union.”
