What to expect from Connecticut's new paid leave program - theday.com

Connecticut’s new paid leave law, passed in 2019, is going into effect on Jan. 1, 2022. Here’s what it means for workers and employers.

With the COVID-19 pandemic once again surging, employers finding it difficult to fill open positions and workers in different fields striking for better work conditions, the new law, which will allow qualifying workers to receive paid leave for up to 12 weeks, comes at a critical time.

A payroll deduction from worker paychecks will pay for the program — one of the most comprehensive in the country. Benefits will start being paid to approved applicants starting Jan. 1. The income replacement paid through the program cannot surpass 60 times the state's minimum wage, which is currently $13 an hour.

People can apply for the program and access resources through the Connecticut Paid Leave Authority's website, ctpaidleave.org, or by calling (877) 499-8606.

Workers submit their application and their employer completes an employer verification form provided by the worker. The paid leave authority then decides whether to grant paid leave. If it does, "benefits are issued to the applicant via direct deposit into the applicant's bank account or with a Visa debit card."

There are several reasons people can seek paid leave: people starting or expanding a family, experiencing a serious health condition, needing to care for a family member with a serious health condition, impacted by domestic violence, caring for a military member injured...
