As government reforms make it easier to dismiss doctors who use discriminatory language online, employers across sectors are reassessing policies

The government has launched a consultation on proposed regulations aimed at making it easier to dismiss doctors who use discriminatory language on social media.
The Department of Health and Social Care said there had been “too many” instances of doctors using racist and antisemitic language, particularly in posts shared on social media.
In October 2025, Lord John Mann began a review into tackling antisemitism and other forms of racism across the NHS, following the case of Rahmeh Aladwan, a resident doctor who was accused of posting on social media in celebration of Hamas’s attack on Israel.

In September 2025, the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS) ruled her fit to practise, citing her right to freedom of speech. However, the case was later referred back to tribunal, which suspended her for 15 months.
Another doctor, Asif Munaf, was struck off the medical register earlier this year after the MPTS found he posted 36 “seriously offensive” comments on social media, including racist and antisemitic comments.
While the government’s reforms will only apply to medical professionals, discriminatory social media posts are a concern for many employers.
