August 11 – Whistleblower Abdullah Ibhais has been prevented from testifying in a US Court about the 2022 Qatar World Cup after Jordanian authorities stopped him from leaving Amman Airport.
On Monday, Ibhais, according to the law firm representing him, checked in his luggage and had his passport stamped before security services took him aside and prevented him from travelling to the United States. He had been scheduled to testify about human trafficking and forced labour in relation to the 2022 World Cup, a tournament that was overshadowed by the plight of migrant workers.
A statement read: “This marks the third time in recent months that the Jordanian authorities have interfered with Mr. Ibhais’ ability to provide this testimony. Mr. Ibhais had his passport confiscated by Jordanian authorities on May 10, 2026, shortly before he was scheduled to fly to Oslo to provide his deposition testimony for this case. On August 7, 2026, one day after he received his visa to travel to the United States, Mr. Ibhais was also detained by Jordanian authorities.”
His stamp was cancelled and Ibhais was told to return home. His lawyer Aron Helluga added: “It is extremely concerning that the Jordanian authorities are interfering with Mr. Ibhais’ ability to provide truthful testimony in a U.S. legal proceeding.”
