A whistleblower in the Legal Aid Board has made a protected disclosure to the justice minister, alleging that board property leases worth millions of euro are “unlawful”.
In December, a solicitor involved with the organisation contacted Helen McEntee to say that it had “repeatedly failed to comply with a legal and statutory obligation”.
The solicitor has pointed out that the 1995 Civil Legal Aid Act establishing the board required “the consent of the minister” for the board “to acquire, hold and dispose of land or an interest in land or . . . hold and dispose of any other property”.
A recent dispute over a property deal in Waterford revealed that the board had not sought or received ministerial approval for its property dealings.
