California Senator Alex Padilla (pictured) said Monday that the Trump administration allegedly directed Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officials to use improper procedures and questionable data to investigate suspected "unlawful voters" and create federal law-enforcement records on them, including naturalized American citizens, citing a whistleblower disclosure.
"If unreliable DHS data is used to generate purported evidence of "unlawful voters," that could disenfranchise eligible voters or disrupt state and local election administration," the senator said in the joint statement with Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, adding that these allegations are "especially alarming" as they come just weeks before the November midterms, accusing Trump of attempting to "rig the results."
Padilla and Schumer called on DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin and US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Director Joseph B. Edlow to immediately suspend the "Unlawful Voter Initiative" and provide Congress with an urgent report detailing its activities.
