Safety standards and environmental containment protocols at Dounreay have come under intense scrutiny following an acid fume escape inside the site’s D1310 Laboratories.
A site worker, speaking on condition of anonymity, has come forward to reveal details of the chemical leak, raising urgent concerns regarding worker safety and operational oversight within the active lab complex.
According to the whistleblower, the incident occurred during routine chemical processing, supporting the ongoing decommissioning of the Caithness nuclear facility. An unexpected chemical reaction within the active laboratory complex caused a “sudden buildup of acidic vapours”.
The fumes subsequently escaped primary containment structures, venting directly into operational working areas. The release forced staff in the immediate vicinity to clear the localised area to avoid the airborne chemical hazard.
An internal investigation is under way into the incident, Dounreay has confirmed.
“There are growing concerns on the ground about how ventilation systems and chemical containment are being managed during these operations,” the worker stated.
“When acid fumes vent into areas where staff are actively working, it isn’t just a minor glitch – it raises serious questions about containment integrity, equipment maintenance, and how quickly warnings are communicated across the floor.”
