Former Facebook employee and whistleblower Arturo Behar said that Meta’s multibillion-dollar settlement with dozens of US states will not provide sufficient protection for teenagers from harm associated with the company’s platforms. As The Guardian reports, Behar believes that limits on time spent using Facebook and Instagram do not make these platforms safe for young people.
Dozens of states filed lawsuits against Meta, claiming that the company created addictive products that led to mental health problems among young people, including eating disorders, depression and suicides. Under the settlement, Meta must significantly change how its platforms operate, including introducing strict limits on the time teenagers can spend on Facebook and Instagram.
A non-algorithmic feed will open by default for teenagers. Parents will be able to switch teenagers’ feeds to a non-personalized mode. The company must also strengthen parental controls, make existing safety settings standard for young users, and introduce night and school modes that will restrict app use at specified times. A number of social comparison features, including beauty filters and like counts, will be disabled by default.
