Kim Tae-woo, the former mayor of Seoul’s Gangseo District and the whistleblower in the alleged cash-for-nomination scandal involving Representative Kang Sun-woo, stated on the 6th, “The Democratic Party’s election-related financial misconduct is not a recent issue,” adding, “Investigative authorities must clarify everything transparently.”
Kim, appearing as a complainant at the Public Crime Investigation Unit of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency around 1:53 p.m. the same day, made this remark. Earlier, in December of last year, shortly after allegations against Kang surfaced, Kim had filed a complaint with the police accusing Kang, Representative Kim Byung-kee, and Seoul City Council member Kim Kyung of violating the Political Funds Act.
Kim criticized, “This case required immediate search and seizure and securing the suspects, but in the meantime, Kim Kyung departed for the U.S., and there is no way to know how they coordinated their stories during the critical few days that were the ‘golden time.’” He emphasized, “A detention-based investigation into them is urgently needed now.”
He further noted, “Kim Kyung claimed he never gave money, which contradicts Kang Sun-woo’s statement that he returned the funds after receiving them,” and added, “As the secretary-general of the nomination committee at the time, Kim Byung-kee should be held legally accountable for failing to block Kim Kyung’s nomination despite knowing the details.”
