A whistleblower, Owula Mangortey, has written to Major-General BK Onwona, the Chief of Army Staff, demanding a public inquiry into $8 million donation allegedly received by Lt. Colonel (rtd) Gbevlo-Lartey on behalf of Ghanaian soldiers.

This development follows a defamation suit filed by Lt. Colonel Gbevlo-Lartey against Owula Mangortey, seeking GHC10 million in damages.

Background of the Controversy

Owula Mangortey, a self-proclaimed whistleblower with a known face and address, has been monitoring military and security deployments in the Upper East Region since 2021.

On November 3, 2024, he received a message from Lt. Colonel Gbevlo-Lartey’s WhatsApp number, informing him of the defamation suit.

This suit stems from an article written by Owula Mangortey, alleging that Larry Gbevlo-Lartey collected $8 million from a telecommunication company for the soldiers.

Previous Defamation Suit

Interestingly, this is not Owula Mangortey’s first encounter with defamation suits. In 2019, he was sued by Kwame Dankwah also known as Ola Durojaiye, a security expert and private investigator, for GHC1 million.

However, Owula Mangortey claims that Kwame Dankwah was an ex-convict impersonating a military ranger and molesting soldiers.

Call for Transparency

Owula Mangortey is now seeking a public inquiry into the $8 million donation, requesting that the inquiry be held at the Burma Hall in the presence of soldiers and media.
