Whistleblower docs show confusion in Trump administration over Abrego Garcia case - WJLA

WASHINGTON (7News) — Federal records provided to Congress on Thursday highlighted some confusion among Trump administration officials on how to handle Kilmar Abrego Garcia's case.

Documents, emails, and text records amongst high-ranking officials between late March and early April were provided to Congress by a whistleblower, who previously oversaw immigration litigation for Homeland Security.

The records were released by Democratic Senator Dick Durbin of Illinois, a ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, on behalf of the whistleblower Erez Reuveni. Documents allege Reuveni was terminated from his job on April 11.

In emails and other communications dated after Abrego Garcia was taken to El Salvador's CECOT prison, federal leaders appear to be debating any possible ties to MS-13 outside of the Prince George's County, Maryland report. Several other emails appeared to verify any other possible connection to the gang, but none were listed in the emails provided by the whistleblower.

One email dated March 31 corrected an initial plan that would claim Abrego Garcia was an MS-13 leader.

The El Salvadoran man had been residing in the U.S. illegally. He was erroneously deported from Maryland by U.S. officials in March 2025, despite a 2019 federal order that kept him from being sent back to the country over fear for his safety.
