LAS CRUCES, N.M. (CBS4) — Some big changes have happened at Memorial Medical Center in Las Cruces amid an investigation by the New Mexico Department of Justice.
CBS4 sat down with the woman who first brought these issues to light, Yolanda Diaz.
Diaz said it's taken several years of her efforts to expose the hospital for allegations of denying and delaying life-saving help to cancer patients.
“There's a huge story to be told,” Diaz said. “This is a very large subject. It's very complicated. It's very multi-dimensional. “
Diaz is the executive director of Cancer Aid Resource and Education Inc. in Las Cruces.
“I tried to get help at every level of work, and as many emails and phone calls and meetings I tried to get, things really didn't move forward,” Diaz said.
She’s been advocating for cancer patients at Memorial Medical Center since 2021, claiming many patients have been denied life-saving care due to lack of insurance or funding issues.
"I put in a complaint to the federal government, the U.S. Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General. I put in a complaint to our New Mexico Department of Justice. I put a complaint to the Doña Ana County. I put a complaint to the City of Las Cruces," Diaz said. “It is truly a wealth over health situation.”
Which caused the New Mexico Department of Justice to step in.
