Whistleblower Exposes $96 Million in CVUSD Transportation Overtime, Faces Retaliation - NBC Palm Springs

Steve Everson, a former employee of the Coachella Valley Unified School District (CVUSD), has brought attention to significant financial mismanagement in the district’s Transportation Department, revealing $96 million in overtime payments since 2016. Everson alleged that some employees were falsifying time sheets, inflating hours worked, and contributing to the excessive overtime costs.

According to Everson, he raised these concerns internally with district leadership, including Superintendent Dr. Esparza and board member Jose Gonzalez, more than two and a half years ago. Despite providing detailed information, no corrective action was taken at the time. A recent report has since verified many of the issues Everson initially reported, highlighting the seriousness of the mismanagement.

Everson’s disclosures, however, led to his termination, which he says was retaliatory. He is now pursuing litigation against the district, emphasizing the need for transparency and accountability. He urged current district employees to carefully document their work and communications, warning of a culture of dishonesty in leadership.

The situation has prompted public concern over district management and oversight.
