Whistleblower Hotline: Ellendale seniors express concerns after senior center shutdown - Valley News Live

ELLENDALE, N.D. (Valley News Live) - Board members have made a decision to close the senior community center in Ellendale in the beginning of September.

City leaders expressed a few reasons why the town is closing, as one of them is that there has been a shortage in staffing.

Since the closing, it’s made senior citizens and former staff members a little upset.

“I miss the activities we used to have and I would just like to see it returned,” said Kate Svensen, a senior.

The people of Ellendale are nostalgic as they’ve been looking back on the good times from their adored senior center.

According to city officials, the shutdown also came down to their need for hiring a cook.

“They’ve been having a hard time filling a cook position here in town. So the decision was made to close the kitchen and now that they have an issue finding staffing to even just facilitate the senior center here. They’re looking to close,” said Justin Meidinger, City Council President.

In the meantime, senior citizens are now directed to go to the community center in Oakes, North Dakota, which is just over a half hour away from the Ellendale building.

However, former staff members are still holding out hope that this place will open again.

“Whether I get to cook here again or not, which I hope I do because I miss them greatly. I just feel that they’re a group of people definitely worth fighting for. And then allowing the seniors the opportunity to elect their own board,” said Holli Jo Kronberg, a...
