Whistleblower Hotline: Error leads to some Eventide residents being overcharged - Valley News Live

MOORHEAD, MINN. (Valley News Live) - Many residents at the Eventide Living Center in South Moorhead were caught off-guard when their rent went up unexpectedly.

Valley News Live was told an error caused them to pay more than usual.

Several of them had to re-adjust their cost of living being charged more than $100 extra on top of their typical rent.

“This month [October], I got a bill and suddenly, my rent has gone up,” said Linda Short, one of the worried residents.

Short has been living at the Eventide Senior Center for six years. She says that rent fluctuates from year to year, but she’s never seen an increase like this.

“Now I know for a fact because I’ve seen them. Some of these go back to July, mine goes back to August,” said Short.

Not only were some residents overcharged rent, but this was also backdated for months. Linda adds that the bill came to her on a Saturday, not during normal business hours.

“I believe it was purposely mailed so we could get it on the weekend. Offices are closed, right? I mean, I guess I might do the same thing so I wouldn’t get a bunch of complaints,” said Short.

According to another resident, “Eventide has acknowledged the error after I contacted them,” and “residents were all mistakenly billed for the portion the state pays instead of their calculated base income. Supposedly someone clicked the wrong button.”

“I can’t help but wonder what’s going on here. This came out of the blue for no reason!” said Short.
