MOORHEAD, Minn. (Valley News Live) - A longtime Moorhead couple says a city stormwater project near Minnesota State University Moorhead (MSUM) has turned their quiet block into what they call a “disaster,” leaving them worried about access, safety, and basic services.
“It’s a disaster. It’s one of the biggest messes I’ve seen in Moorhead since we’ve moved here,” said resident, Rick Bergley.
Rick and his wife, Kim, have lived across from Weld Hall on 6th Ave. S. for 16 years. They say construction of a new stormwater retention pond in what used to be an MSUM parking lot has “completely cut off” their block.
“We’ve been through this kind of stuff before, but this is the first time we’ve been stuck on an island with only an alley to get out, that’s it,” Rick said.
Both 5th and 6th avenues between 11th and 12th streets are currently torn up, leaving only a narrow, one-lane alley for every car, delivery driver, and emergency vehicle trying to get in or out of their block, the couple said.
The Bergleys say they both struggle with mobility issues, which makes even simple trips harder.
“I feel like I’m stranded here for the next however many weeks without being able to leave,” Kim said.
The family said a handwritten note left on their door warned that construction could last six weeks — and they worry it could stretch longer, depending on weather.
