The UK Home Secretary, Priti Patel, could soon sign off on the extradition of Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks. Assange is an Australian whistleblower that is currently being detained in the UK.
Despite a US extradition looming closer, it will still be possible for Assange to appeal the decision, and he could not be transferred into a US Federal prison. Still, the UK and the US governments are working closely together.
Assange’s extradition to the US
Assange is the creator of the WikiLeaks media organization. The whistleblower became popular in 2010 after he attracted global attention. At the time, Assange published several leaks showing war atrocities carried out by the US in Afghanistan and Iraq. Some of the videos showed US soldiers killing civilians, including a photographer for the Reuters news company and his driver.
Shortly after the leaks were made public, Assange became a target for authorities based in the US. An international arrest warrant was also issued for Assange by the Swedish law enforcement authorities accusing him of sexual assault. However, Assange denied these accusations saying they were made as an excuse to extradite him to the United States.
