Whistleblower Lawsuit Claims Montclair Schools Covered Up Bullying - Montclair Local News

The Montclair Public Schools former mental health and anti-bullying coordinator claims in a lawsuit that the district fired her following her refusal to suppress reports of Harassment, Intimidation and Bullying.

Maggie Shaver-Dock claims in the complaint filed in Superior Court in Essex County that then-Superintendent Jonathan Ponds ordered her to alter state-required HIB reports. Ponds died in July.

Shaver-Dock claims in the March 20 civil lawsuit that she experienced “escalating hostility, both verbally and in writing, from colleagues and Central Office administrators who refused to comply with the HIB law.” The lawsuit references pupil services supervisor Shivoyne Trim.

‘Violating Legally Mandated Processes’

“Ms. Shaver-Dock also observed attempts to delay or conceal HIB incidents and disregard of risk-assessment protocols, further violating legally mandated processes,” the suit says. “Dr. Trim directed Ms. Shaver-Dock to ‘fix’ others’ negative perceptions and advised her to ‘kiss ass’ and learn to ‘eat shit’ in order to protect herself.”

The lawsuit says that when Shaver-Dock asked Trim for help addressing HIB “noncompliance by principals deemed ‘untouchable,’” she was told such principals “had close ties to the superintendent and a longstanding local presence.”

Shaver-Dock also requested help from School Business Administrator Christina Hunt on HIB reporting, the suit says.
