Whistleblower lawyer says his security clearance has been restored - ABA Journal

A whistleblower lawyer said in a LinkedIn post Tuesday his access to classified information has been restored months after President Donald Trump announced in a memo that he was revoking the Washington, D.C., lawyer's security clearance.

“Yesterday, we were officially notified by the U.S. government that President Trump’s memo that revoked my security clearance without any due process no longer has any effect over me,” lawyer Mark Zaid wrote. “My access eligibility to classified info has been restored!”

In December, U.S. District Judge Amir Ali of the District of Columbia granted Zaid’s request for a preliminary injunction blocking the Trump administration from revoking his clearance. The injunction was set to go into effect Tuesday. The Trump administration is appealing.

The court “joins the several others in this district that have enjoined the government from using the summary revocation of security clearances to penalize lawyers for representing people adverse to it,” Ali wrote in his order.

The White House did not immediately return a request for comment.

The situation with Zaid dates back to last February, when Trump said he was revoking Zaid’s security clearance. In 2019, Zaid represented a whistleblower who led to Trump’s first impeachment over a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
