Whistleblower medic sues HSE over claims he was 'ostracised' after Kerry CAMHS doctor exposé - Independent.ie

The doctor whose actions helped bring to light the South Kerry children’s mental health service medication scandal is suing the HSE over the way he was allegedly treated after turning whistleblower.

So disillusioned is consultant psychiatrist Dr Ankur Sharma at his alleged treatment that he has left the country for a post abroad and vowed never to return to Ireland.

He claims he was sidelined and ostracised after revealing major issues with the prescribing and diagnostic practices of a junior doctor at South Kerry child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS).

Dr Sharma’s concerns were vindicated by the Maskey Report earlier this year which found that 227 children received risky care from the junior doctor, Dr David Kromer, and 13 received risky care from other doctors while attending South Kerry CAMHS between July 2016 and April 2021.

Proof of significant harm was found in relation to 46 of these children. Significant failings in supervision and governance were also identified.

Dr Kromer stood by his prescribing practices when concerns were put to him by the Irish Independent. He is not currently practising while he awaits the outcome of a Medical Council investigation

Dr Sharma’s solicitor confirmed to the Irish Independent that the Indian-born consultant was now pursuing legal action against the HSE.
