A new motion in the harassment lawsuit filed by Montclair CFO Padmaja Rao alleges that Mayor Sean Spiller joined with township officials in retaliating against her after she raised questions about numerous alleged improprieties in the way government operated, including whether some council members were receiving health insurance benefits they weren’t entitled to.
Rao, in a recent motion to amend the complaint she filed in October, alleges that Spiller began an investigation “in an attempt to create a derogatory record of her job performance and conduct, which could undermine Rao in her work and potentially terminate her employment.”
The allegation is based on a statement made by Councilor Peter Yacobellis at the Oct. 25, 2022 council meeting, a week after Rao filed her lawsuit. At that meeting, Yacobellis alluded to an exchange he had with the mayor a month before in which he claims Spiller was poking around for negative things to say about Rao.
“I’m also concerned that on multiple occasions including recently at the end of the last council meeting [held on September 28] that you mayor, engaged me and others in a conversation about Ms. Rao’s performance and behavior, mentioning several transgressions,” Yacobellis is quoted as saying in a transcript of the Oct. 25 meeting.
